Rescue Me ID: 16-05-20-00488BraveHeart (female)

Great Dane Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

About a year and a half ago, my husband and I found an abandoned, starving puppy on the side of our road in the middle of a freezing rain downpour. We were not in any good position to take on a dog right then, but we did what any decent humans would do and we rescued the dog and took it to the vet. We scraped together what we had to get her taken care of, and seeing as she was homeless, we just kept her. The trouble is, we work all the time, the dog is miserable because she's left outside nearly all the time because she doesn't play well with the cat (that's the one thing she shows aggression towards), and she's just so unhappy she sleeps ... (Read More)all the time when she's not playing with the neighbor dogs. She's an awesome dog, never shown any aggression to any person or dog, will lick you to death if you let her, and just wants someone to be her companion. The situation she's in with us is not fair to her, and we know it. Hoping to find her a home where she will be loved and cared for. Note: Please text, if possible, as my job doesn't permit me to take phone calls when I'm at work. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-05-03-00197Maya (female)

Great Dane    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Maya is a sweet female Dane about 3 years old. She has had her tail docked due to a case of 'happy tail' that required amputation. She's great with kids and cat friendly. Maya walks great on a lead, however, she does not like other dogs so she will charge them (typically smaller dogs). We have been working with a trainer on behavior modification, and her new family will need to continue our work. Maya's ideal home is one where the family is large breed savvy. You should have a fenced yard and Maya should be the only dog, although we will consider a meet and greet with another large or giant breed dog that is not dominant.

Rescue Me ID: 15-07-22-00432Howie (male)

Great Dane Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Not Good with Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Abracadabra! I'm Howie! I'm smart, handsome and incredibly talented! After spending my first few years as a yard ornament in rural NC, I am learning all kinds of new and exciting things. I currently know sit, bed, wait and come. I LOVE to play ball, and I'm a very fast swimmer. My foster peeps are working with me to see if I might have some Dockdog talent. Stay tuned for more on that! My life so far has been a bit of a roller coaster. I came to BARC with an 'owie' foot that turned out to be a crushed toe. I've had the owie toe removed and that's all healed and I've completed treatment to get rid of the nasty heartworms that I had because I ... (Read More)was never given the magic pill to keep them from doing their thing. I'm now all good as new, and I'm ready to find my forever family. Just think how impressed all your friends will be if you choose me to be your new family member! It's been said that I'm one of the most tolerant dogs my BARC peeps have ever met. I have let them do whatever needed to be done to help me without a single complaint. I'm great for baths and nail trims. I stand politely and will even hold up my paws for my manicure. I love people of all sizes, and am very gentle. I don't jump up on anyone, and I'm not at all mouthy. I take treats very gently. I'm praise and treat-motivated. I REALLY enjoy car rides and don't even mind when we end up at the vet. I LOVE getting attention and treats from everyone I meet. I'm a 78 pound, goofy mixed breed boy. My peeps think possibly a Great Dane/Pointer/Who Knows What. Whatever the combination is, I turned out pretty handsome, if I do say so myself! I've got the big Great Dane head and a long-legged Pointer body, so the usual bully-breed restrictions don't pertain to me (though make sure there aren't weight restrictions where you live). Because I was chained up and attacked by other dogs in my previous life, I don't quite know what to make of other dogs. I have learned to be quite tolerant of all the comings and goings of the other dogs at our little shelter, but I do get anxious around strange dogs and if they get too close, I go on the defensive. My BARC peeps think I will do best as an only dog. And I should definitely have my own secure backyard to keep me safe and sound. I'm a good boy. Can I come home with you? Rescue Me ID: 14-03-06-00011Chauncey (male)

Great Dane Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Chauncey does wonderful with small dogs, cats, and large female dogs. SOME large male dogs he dislikes. He is a large dog who still is very much puppy. He needs an active family. Chauncey loves children! He is shy of elderly men with beards (we don't know why), so we suggest a home within a couple hours so we can make sure Chauncey fits within your family. He has very unique requests and the best way to make him happy is to just give him a try. Chauncey is 85 lbs.

PIease Read Before Adopting a Great Dane in Virginia
Great Dane Dogs can make good pets in Virginia if they match your IifestyIe. The Great Dane is an enormous, but extremely gentle breed often referred to as the Gentle Giant. Great Danes are kind, loyal, and sociable. They need to be around people. Great Danes are gentle, devoted, and wonderful with children, but should be supervised with little ones because of their large size. Great Danes should be well trained as puppies. Great Danes can live in an apartment with enough daily exercise but do best with a large yard.
