Rescue Me ID: 15-07-22-00432Howie (male)
Howie came to us heartworm positive and with a badly injured leg that had been caught up in the line that he had been tied up to all of his 3 years. He has since had a toe removed (he doesn't miss it) and has successfully completed his heartworm treatment. Howie is a big, 80 pound, goofy boy. We're not sure what breed(s) he is, other than mixed, but we think he's possibly a Great Dane/Pointer/Who Knows What. Howie is one of the most tolerant dogs we've ever met. He has let us do whatever needed to be done to help him without a single complaint. Because he was chained up and attacked by other dogs in his previous life, he doesn't quite know what to make of other dogs, and may actually do best as an only dog. If you have a well-balanced dog, we would be happy to set up a meet and greet and see how they get along. He has been quite tolerant of all the comings and goings of the other dogs at our little shelter. Howie is a boy that wants very much to please his people. Though he has been an outdoor dog all his life, he has kept his new indoor shelter clean. He very much likes being an INDOOR dog, but will need some training to learn house rules. Howie loves to earn treats and he loves to hang out and just be near you. He is proving to be a very intelligent and easy to train boy. He loves learning new things playing fetch and swimming, but what Howie loves most is riding in cars! He is one very happy co-pilot, even if the trip is only to the vet. You can get to know this big, easy-going guy on his very own Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BARCsHowie If you are interested in making Howie part of your family, you can find out more here: http://barcdogs.org/Adopt_Info.html (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-04-12-00399Crash (male)
Weighing in at 120 pounds, Crash is one big boy! We guess him to be an American Bulldog/Great Dane mix. There is not a mean bone in his great big body, but Crash was not property socialized as a puppy, and as a result, this big goofy boy is no 'social genius'. He is WONDERFUL at home, but social scenes aren't his strong suit, and his extra-large size can make him hard to manage. Because of this, Crash will need a dedicated owner willing to work on desensitizing him to social situations, or someone that's okay with him being a home body. He is crate trained, house broken, and working on his leash manners. He knows sit, down and wait. We are willing to waive his adoption fee for a potential family to put towards a professional trainer to help fine tune him. What Crash may lack in manners, he more than makes up for with his charm and personality. Come meet Crash and see his big, sweet, mushy face in person. Approximately 2-3 years old, 123 pounds (3/2015) Virginia Paws for Pits is a registered 501c3 charity. All of our dogs are pulled form high kill shelters in VA, NC, SC, TN, and GA. Please visit our website at www.virginiapawsforpits.org for more information on any dog or if you'd like to fill out an adoption application for any dog. Adoption fees are as follows: $250 for puppies under 6 months that have not yet been spayed/neutered, $200 for dogs under 1 year that have been altered, $150 for dogs over 1 year, and $100 for dogs that have been in our program for over a year. Adoption fees include spay/neuter (if old enough), all age appropriate vaccines, dewormer (for puppies), and microchip for all dogs. All of our dogs are either in foster homes or local boarding. Please call us or email us if you'd like to set up a meet with one of our dogs. We have several featured dogs at our Petco adoption events every Saturday from 10-2. Rescueme.org asks us to name a predominate breed. We use visual identification to do this which is not always reliable. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-03-06-00011Chauncey (male)
Chauncey is available for adoption. He does wonderful with small dogs, cats, and large female dogs. SOME large male dogs he dislikes. He is a large dog who still is very much puppy. He needs an active family. Chauncey loves children! He is shy of elderly men with beards (We don't know why) I suggest a home within a couple hours so we can make sure Chauncey fits within your family. He has very unique requests and the best way to make him happy is to just give him a try. Chauncey is 85 lbs

Great Dane Dogs can make good pets in Virginia if they match your IifestyIe. The Great Dane is an enormous, but extremely gentle breed often referred to as the Gentle Giant. Great Danes are kind, loyal, and sociable. They need to be around people. Great Danes are gentle, devoted, and wonderful with children, but should be supervised with little ones because of their large size. Great Danes should be well trained as puppies. Great Danes can live in an apartment with enough daily exercise but do best with a large yard.
