Animal ID: 15-12Cookie (female)
Hello everyone, this is Cookie. Cookie came to us as a Guardian Surrender because she was not getting enough exercise. She is a very nice girl, but does not like cats, and would probably be better in a home that had a dog of the same size or larger. We would also not put her with small children because of her size. She also loves to give big hugs! Please contact us if you are interested in adding this beautiful girl to your family!

Rescue Me ID: 15-06-05-00126Mudslide (male)
Make way for this big, goofy puppy: Mudslide! We pulled this boy from the Yonkers Animal Shelter where he was overlooked for some time because they have so many other dogs. We saw his potential and brought this diamond in the ruff to our shelter where we can give him a better shot at a forever home! Mudslide is a total character! He loves to make people laugh and when he sees someone he knows, his whole body wiggles with pure excitement! It's hard to believe he was found tied to a swing set in the middle of winter, not far from where the Yonkers mudslide occurred. Perhaps he grew bigger than expected, perhaps his family needed to evacuate and couldn't take him too. We will never know why Mudslide was left there, but he doesn't look back, he would rather look forward! Mudslide cannot wait to be part of a family! He does well with other dogs, but is still a rambunctious puppy and loves to play. We think he would do well with kids but due to his size and energy level we think older children that can withstand the wagging tail of a big, happy dog would be the best fit! Muddy has started learning basic obedience and loves going on adventures. This sweet boy is so deserving of finally getting a loving home to call his own and he cannot wait for you to come meet him and fall in love To fill out an application and get pre-approved for Mudslide, please visit https://goo.gl/oUcqxk (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-04-20-00469Guapo (male)
We adopted Guapo in 2009 from the Animal Care & Control center in East Harlem. New York. We never found out why Guapo was left there. He was already house-trained, very loving and immediately brought joy into our lives. He is a 7-8 year old Pit Bull / Great Dane mix, neutered and weighs roughly 60 lbs. He is extremely affectionate, loves to cuddle and listens to commands. He is friendly, social and gets along great with children, adults and most other dogs. He has been the love of our life six years, but we now understand that Guapo would be much happier in a home with a yard. He currently has no place to run free and shows compulsive behavior that tell us he is not getting the exercise he needs (e.g., chasing his tail, occasionally chewing things while we are at work). We try to give him as much exercise as possible, but his anxiety has increased since we have had our first child. IMPORTANT - he is very gentle with our baby and has never shown any aggression. Guapo will thrive in a loving home with open space for him to run. The ideal situation would be for Guapo to be adopted with his little 'sister' Cricket (5 year old pug / brussels griffon mix, spayed). These two animals are best friends and so closely bonded. We want to give these amazing dogs the happiest life possible. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-04-05-00299Jack Carlton (male)
Lookin' For Large & Loving? Jack was born December 4, 2011 and weighs about 100 pounds. He is one TALL boy!! He looks like a yellow Lab, but his feet and legs are massive leaning us in the Dane direction. He is good on leash and in the car. Cats are a little too fun to chase so he will need a home with no cats. He's wonderful with all the dogs here and we feel strongly he needs another dog buddy in his next life. He is also good with kids. Jack is devoted and will, probably, be home sick when he leaves her, so he will need a couple of weeks for him to adjust and understand that getting his own home is a good thing. We do feel he needs his humans home much of the time. Even though Jack does ok on the adult Science Diet food here, we were told that Jack needs a grain free diet and thrived on Grain Free Salmon food and that he could not be crated because he would hurt himself trying to get out. The last photo is of Jack at Petsmart being the donation dog. Update: Jack has a bottom canine tooth that is split. Our vet found it to be very tight in the jaw bone and felt the risk of breaking the jaw was not worth forcing the tooth out. At this time he seems to be coping just fine. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-01-10-00432Rocky (male)
Rocky came from a home where they didn't know he would get this big. He is a high energy player but crashes nicely on your lap with his nylabone, providing you have a lap big enough! He would do best with another high energy player but not a dominant male. He's getting better on a leash, highly recommend taking him to training classes. Kids in previous house weren't very nice to him so he's reactive to bikes. Not recommended with small children just due to size. NO CATS! Fenced yard, vet references & home visit required.

Rescue Me ID: 14-12-09-00802Hoss Owen (male)
Hi! I'm Hoss & I'm Great!!! Hoss was born about February 20, 2011 and weighs a, probably, about 130 lbs. or he will when he is filled out. He is just gorgeous and SO sweet! He is wonderful with other dogs and did well on the long car ride here. He did arrive with a fatty cyst on his left hip which we will have removed and then he will be good to go! He was found by dog control wandering around on his own. So, adoptions have been strong and we had room to rescue 29 dogs and 3 gorgeous cats from a high kill area. Not one complained about the long ride and all have settled in nicely. Many of them seem to have understood, right away, that they were now safe in our Dog House with fresh blankets, lots of Science Diet food, automatic waterers and even toys! It gets a little confusing when getting files ready for so many at once, so if a breed, size, age seems questionable with the photos shown, please let us know. We are doing the best we can to save as many as we can. We so appreciate your understanding and willingness to adopt a dog we know little about that would have been dead, within a few days, if they had not come here. We always test out of towners for heart worm. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Great Dane in New York
Great Dane Dogs can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. The Great Dane is an enormous, but extremely gentle breed often referred to as the Gentle Giant. Great Danes are kind, loyal, and sociable. They need to be around people. Great Danes are gentle, devoted, and wonderful with children, but should be supervised with little ones because of their large size. Great Danes should be well trained as puppies. Great Danes can live in an apartment with enough daily exercise but do best with a large yard.
