Toby is a Great Dane/boxer mix 14 month old boy who was recently adopted from another Georgia shelter. He was found in the woods last week and brought into the shelter by 2 forest rangers. His chip was traced to the adopting shelter which attempted to contact the adopter. They were not successful and requested that we handle his next adoption. When found, Toby was very thin and ravenous when offered food. he appeared to have been on his own for awhile. We are working on getting him up to a healthier weight and he is happy to help us do that. From the aggressive reaction to the cats in the office he appears to be quite cat unfriendly. He is ... Rescue Me ID: 16-11-26-00066Cavo (male)

Great Dane    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Cavo is a friendly, sweet, compassionate dog who loves attention and snuggles. He is roughly 130 pounds, but very gentle. He loves comfy beds, his ears massaged, rolling in the grass outside, laying in the sun, playing with his rope toy, resting his paw in your hand, putting his head in your lap, loves being sandwiched in a hug with his owner's, and gets along great with all dogs. He also is trained not to get on furniture! Cavo has pancreatic insufficiency (lack of digestive enzymes) which means he needs medicine to accompany each meal so that he can maintain proper weight. A potential owner must be willing to continue with his medicine as ... (Read More)without it Cavo will not live a happy life. At an early age, I had Cavo's stomach tacked to reduce the chance of bloat, (a common medical condition with great danes). So this is one less problem a new owner will have to worry about! Cavo is 7 years old but shows no signs of slowing down. He is a goofball! Unfortunately my wife and I are expanding our family and fear we may not be able to keep up with Cavo's needs. (Less)

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Needs Vaccinations, Deaf,
 Abused/Neglected

Chaos is a beautiful deaf dane whose eye sight is failing. (He has a starburt in one eye and a cataract in the other.) He was a rescue from an abused family and is very food aggressive, so do not recommend other animals. He also has an intense dislike for anyone with 'dark skin' (stems from his abuse). He has two modes, full energy or lazy couch potato. He bonds to one or two people, so would be idea for a single person or couple. He like's children but is very energetic when playing and even older children tend to get knocked over. He loves curling up in your lap for snuggle time and will try to sleep in same bed as you. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-03-00198Carmen (female)

Great Dane    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Introducing Carmen! What a great combination of a Great Dane/Hound mix! Carmen is about 70 lbs and is finally at her ideal weight. Her coat has also improved tremendously in foster care and is now so soft, shiny, and full of color. She was probably born in 2011 and she is fully crate trained. She absolutely loves children but doesn't quite understand the concept of personal space. So as long as they're ok with a giant love-bug, it'll work out great! When Carmen has to go potty, she signals by standing by the door. She hasn't had an accident in her crate and keeps it clean through the night. Attention is something that Carmen is certainly a ... (Read More)fan of, and she can be a tad bit needy sometimes. She loves pets and butt scratches and if ignored enough, she'll eventually lie down on the dog bed by herself. New people do not scare her in the least since she sees all humans as best friends! She'll trot right up to them and shower them with kisses. Walks are one of Carmen's favorite things and she gets VERY excited when Foster Mom takes the leash out. She even leaps down the stairs skipping 4 or 5 steps at a time! She is still working on her manners as she cannot contain her excitement and that makes it difficult to put a leash on. Despite her energy peaks for walks, she is very chill dog who enjoys cat naps very much so. For the most part, she's a go-with-the-flow type of gal who would do just fine with daily walks and some play time. Carmen is working hard on her skills - she has mastered waiting patiently for her meals and is working on Sit, Leave It, and Down. She is always such a happy dog and never stops wagging her tail. In fact, when she first came in to ACR she had a bad case of happy tail. It's a real thing- dogs that wag their tail so hard that it's constantly banging against doors, walls, fences, etc until it bleeds. It took a while to heal (how do you tell a dog to stop being happy!?) but she is much better now! Though Carmen has lived with other dogs in her previous foster home, we think she would do best in an only dog household. That way, she can be as relaxed an happy as possible. She is a wonderful dog and will make such a big, happy addition to any family in need of an only canine! If you're looking for a big heart with big love, Carmen is your gal! We require a home visit for all of our adoptions. Because of this, we only adopt to homes within 30 minutes of Athens, GA. Please visit our website for more info.(www.athenscaninerescue.com) (Less)

My grandparents have lived on a farm for the last 20 plus years, and they have always taken in any animal that wonders onto their property. Unfortunately, we lost my grandfather this year so my grandmother needs to sell the farm and move in with her sister. This little girl is her baby and never leaves her side. She lost one of her back legs when she was hit by a car as a puppy. Gets around just fine! Is used to having lots of land and being an indoor/outdoor dog. She's a big girl. Some kind of lab mix. She can be a LITTLE food aggressive, but other than that she loves everyone and everything. We will miss her, but she needs a good home with ... Rescue Me ID: 16-08-05-00531Liza (female)

Great Dane Mix    Age: Puppy

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Liza is a one year old (just turned!) Great Dane mix that was surrendered by her owners when they couldn't pay her medical bills. She is a sweet and very energetic girl that would make a great running partner with all her youthful enthusiasm! Her foster family is working with her on basic obedience / leash training and that would need to continue in her new home. She is currently being fostered with an 8 yr old who she does well with, but her exuberance would probably be to much for younger kids. We do think she would get along with a larger male that lets her be in charge, but has decided the smaller dogs are not her jam. Liza is ... (Read More)spayed, house trained, crate trained, current on vaccinations and ready for her new family! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We highly recommend that our potential adopters fill out an online application as soon as possible, as it greatly expedites the process of finding the right dog for your situation. The adoption app is available on our website (www.bullpenrescue.org) under the 'work with us' tab. If you choose not to fill out an application before inquiring about a particular dog, please briefly tell us about yourself, family, and lifestyle since this will help us determine if the dog you're interested in is a good match. Our dogs are available for adoption nationwide but preference is given to adopters willing to do an in-person meeting. Please understand that our dogs are not adopted on a first-come, first-serve basis, but rather we strive for a 'perfect placement' so we know that they will not be failed again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Great Dane in Georgia
Great Dane Dogs can make good pets in Georgia if they match your IifestyIe. The Great Dane is an enormous, but extremely gentle breed often referred to as the Gentle Giant. Great Danes are kind, loyal, and sociable. They need to be around people. Great Danes are gentle, devoted, and wonderful with children, but should be supervised with little ones because of their large size. Great Danes should be well trained as puppies. Great Danes can live in an apartment with enough daily exercise but do best with a large yard.
