Rescue Me ID: 15-07-13-00201Sissy (female)

Great Dane    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

SISSY, 5-6 YEAR OLD BLACK FEMALE THIS IS A COURTESY LISTING. We adopted Sissy in August of 2014 from the South LA Shelter. She was picked up from the street and has no known history prior to that. Our main reason for getting Sissy was companionship for Duke, who was depressed after the death of our first Dane, Gigi. Unfortunately Duke and Sissy didn't get along well at first -- They had a period of adjustment with a few fights before they figured out who was dominant. Duke won out, and they have gotten along great since then. However we are careful to feed them separately because Sissy is food aggressive and would be better off as an ... (Read More)'only child.' Sissy is extremely affectionate, obedient , very mellow, napping in the sun, napping on the couch, living the couch potato lifestyle. She likes being in the same room with me mainly, and follows me around a lot. She's not particularly 'needy,' though - most of the day she is just chilling on her own. Sissy's health is good - we are guessing she is 5 or 6 years old. Her weight is normal, and her energy and happiness is great. She has heavy calluses on her elbows, typical for dogs who lie on concrete. We are guessing she was a 'back yard' dog. She is totally house-trained, and in fact always pees and poops in one corner of the yard -- . As obedient as she is, the temptation is too much for her when it comes to food. She also has a strong prey drive for squirrels -- any squirrel will make her go nuts and she will cry and jump at any tree that has a squirrel. This has severely limited our walks. Most of her exercise comes from daycare, running around with other dogs. Everyone loves her at daycare where she goes three times a week. She's not a big 'player' with other dogs, but she gets along well with others. Everything I describe above is where she is now, after about 9 months with us. She has gone through a huge transformation, and it was not that easy at first. She had some fear aggression with certain triggers - mainly tight spaces, big males, and fast movements. In the beginning, before we knew to be careful with introductions, she lunged at several people, with her mouth open, essentially 'biting' them -- not chomping down, but enough to scratch and sometimes break the skin with her teeth. She just wasn't socialized when we got her and was very afraid and protective. Also, she would take Duke's barking as a danger sign and this would partly trigger her in the past to lunge at strangers. We've since learned not to surprise her with house guests and just be careful how we introduce her to people. It took a while, but she has acclimated to the house and the routine and is very happy. I imagine there will be a similar period of adjustment in any new environment, but the change-over should be less challenging than we had, since she's already learned so much since coming from the shelter. Once she trusts you, she will be very affectionate and bond deeply. Why are we placing Sissy? Unfortunately our living situation has changed -- . With my workload I just can't take proper care of two big Danes by myself. Duke is extremely large and young with a lot of energy. I am making it work for now, but since I can't walk them together, it has really been challenging. We want Sissy to have an owner who can focus on her and help her finish her journey out of her terrible past to a more peaceful life.     Gunnar is a 4 month old black lab mix. I took in his momma (Black lab mix, father was a yellow lab) and 6 of his siblings when they were 1 week old. Gunnar has been with me ever since. All of his brothers and sisters have been adopted. Gunnar was originally diagnosed with a grade 5 heart murmur. Which out of 6 was a pretty bad diagnosis, so he couldnt be altered at that time. We just went back this last week for his final booster of shots and his rabies and the doctor was so happy when she listened to his heart. He is now considered a grade 3 and she is almost certain he will grow out of it. He hasnt been altered yet, we are waiting to see ... (Read More)how much more progress this beautiful boy will make. Gunnar is pure love, he is the kind of puppy who just melts in your arms the minute you pick him up. He is just a mush pot. He loves to fetch, he will bring it back, I cant keep him out of the pool, he is very friendly with other dogs, he is a beta, he is always on his back. He isnt a barker and he is housebroken and crate trained. If you would like to meet my Gunnar boy please inquire below and I will send you an application for his adoption.     Update: special needs baby. Sadly this darling girl started life tragically. Mother and Lalas litter were born in a small dog house forcing mom to step on her babies. Nine of Lalas litter mates did not survive after heroic efforts by rescue and veterinary staff to save them. LaLa has minor neurological deficits that you can barely identify unless you know her history. However she is loving, playful and attentive.     Matilda is a loving five-year-old CKC registered Great Dane which I have raised from a pup. Recent circumstances necessitate finding her a good and loving home as soon as possible. Her new home should be one where she is the only one getting the attention as she does not do well with other animals. She has never displayed any aggressive behavior towards humans whatsoever, but because of her size - she's a Dane after all - she would be best in a home with older children. Despite her age she still has plenty of energy and should have plenty of room to play and run. Even at five, she still gets the occasional spell of 'puppy sprints.' I will ... (Read More)only consider homes for her where she will have sufficient outdoor space. She loves the outdoors and walking and is well trained on the leash. She also has a keen understanding for simple commands and what is being asked of her. She has never been spayed, but we believe her to be barren because of several unsuccessful breeding attempts. She is due for her shots. Please call or e-mail me and I will answer any questions you may have. She has been my constant companion since she was a puppy and I will be very discerning about the family I choose for my girl. (Less)

Great Dane    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

UPDATE: This handsome boy visited the eye veterinary eye specialist and an infection in the right eye is almost completely cleared. The left eye is unaffected. It was NOT a juvenile cataract. Mr. Colt is a bit sweet and shy at first, probably because his sister Lily is so darn bossy. Loves to play and romp, follows right by your side. He is still working on house manners but with a bit more training, lots of love and affection and a family of his own, Colt will be a wonderful companion.

Ed is 65 lbs. and will most likely get up to 80 lbs. He is very passive and timid. He loves to play and truly is younger than they stated. He is around 2 years. Ed has had no training and does not understand when you ask him to 'sit', he just looks at you. He has learned the joy of running after a ball from watching my dog Lucy and if he gets the ball he will not let go of it! He is not food aggressive. With a little training he would be great taking walks. Right now he still gets spooked from his nightmare past. But calms down when he realizes again where he is. What a dog. Wow. Stunning, and eats like a horse. Ed is doing well, ... (Read More)although he does have some issues. Still has the slight wabble and we have not done the neurological testing or the blood work to determine what it is. He is funny and clutzy and so darn tenderhearted. My dogs love him so much. He would be great with dogs and cats and also kids. He still gets somewhat spooked if someone startles him and to get him inside the kitchen to eat he still goes around in a circle and then to the kitchen! i swear dogs can be slightly autistic. He is house broken. His scar on his back is healing. Ed is learning to play and also to catch the ball, well he does not catch it but goes to it and stands over it and then looks back to say he got the ball. So it is Ed's way.     http://youtu.be/fWEIa3cEjh8 http://youtu.be/7oBzSy4Fxfw We Are In Search Of A Loving & Suitable Foster Home in OC/Long Beach area. EVERYTHING is provided for Beaumont. APPLICATION & HOME CHECK IS REQUIRED. Beaumont isn't like any other stray we've come across in rescue, his story is an extraordinary one. Like most strays we come across, this little pup suffered the threats of his environment; emaciation, neglect, abuse, and starvation; only the severity of each of these threat was unlike any other. Beaumont, a puppy about 10 months old now, wasn't just discovered roaming around the heat and dry terrain of Tijuana--he was discovered in ... (Read More)practically a heap of skin and bones using the strength he had left to drag himself around with only his two function forelegs. Such a heart wrenching thought to imagine, a man by the name of Walter had not only witnessed this for himself in person, but he had shared the plea to us in hopes of getting help for this pup. Beaumont was not only visibly emaciated, but he had also been infested with ticks and suffered the pain of licking his flesh raw and rotting. We decided to name him Beaumont, which is french for 'Beautiful Mountain' because he is beautiful and he has already shown us he is as invincible as any mountain. Beaumont has gone under bilateral hind legs amputation due to his deformity there was not another option. Since amputation he feels to move independently & freely, a true miracle to witness. Beaumont is also becoming close to be fully potty trained, he has control over his bladder and bowel so diaper is not necessary. We purchased a custom made wheelchair for outdoor walks. Currently we are focusing on helping him with wheel training consistently aside from his training with our trainer Drew Hayes. Beaumont desperately needs a long term foster home until adoption--and yes we do find unique adopters for even our special need dogs which are the majority of our rescued dogs. We strive to get him to a loving foster family who can appreciate a dog with special needs and who view his journey as inspirational. Our rescue will provide all Beaumont's needs and supply while in foster home. We love Beaumont and will do all we can to help him thrive each and every day.     UPDATE: While we appreciate Corona's family in their efforts to be honest about his behavior, we have had the pleasure of living with Corona for the past few weeks and have personally temperament tested him (3s) and observed his behavior. Corona is a mild as guardian breeds go. His motto is 'protect or be protected,' a learned behavior certainly. When in the presence of a pack leader however, Corona shows NO signs of protective behavior. Not towards children, other dogs, nothing. We are looking for an adult home with guardian breed experience. However please note that in comparison to a true molosser guardian, Corona is a lamb. ... (Read More)Again, as we have observed, giant breed dogs and guardian breed dogs in particular are better pets when their owners are dominant in their pack and without a need for their dog to protect during the normal course of any given day. This is a lovely dog, sweet in temperament, that will bark an alarm at strangers attempting to gain entrance to his property. Upon simple introduction, access is given and the stranger is no longer a stranger anymore. There have been no bite incidents nor have we had occasion to witness any growling or aggression directed at another dog or human. And he gets along with cats. Go figure! Thank you for considering this dog. FROM HIS FORMER FAMILY: ...He walks great on a leash and loves to take walks. There are two issues we are facing now though, in our new neighborhood. Corona gets along with only a few select dogs. He has gotten aggressive towards others dogs but it mainly depends on the attitude of the approaching dog. He is very protective of my husband and I (ON THE WALK AND WITH OTHER DOGS) which is awesome however ... makes it challenging to walk him in our new neighborhood which is very well populated with families and their dogs. We have also experienced him wanting to chase after children that are outside playing and running. He has never bitten anyone or hurt someone however he has scared the children on these certain occasions. This has made walking him increasingly more challenging in our new neighborhood. With these issues and the fact that we have no yard now we were forced to reevaluate Corona's needs and what would be best for him. It breaks our hearts to make this decision but he deserves a home with land that he can run on and a yard that he can enjoy. We want to make sure he goes to a loving home with experienced owners that will give Corona exactly what he needs. There is no doubt in our minds that he will become the love of his new owners life. He loves to cuddle and loves attention. He is very calm but also loves to play. He is house trained and is very good about letting you know when he needs to potty. He sleeps with us at night and loves to be right by your side for leisure time and movie time. He knows basic commands like sit, stay, paw, lay and kennel. Corona is currently in foster in Granada Hills. (Less)

Animal ID: Hes Res1Tinker Bell (female)

Great Dane    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

UPDATE: WILL BE SPAYED BEFORE GOING TO FOSTER OR PERMANENT HOME. We are happy to report that these dogs are doing very well, better than expected. Because of the unpredictable behavior of these dogs at the time of rescue (early evening) and resulting behavioral issues of these dogs, we felt it safe for all to board them in an environment of other giant breed dogs. On site behaviorist was able to assess temperament. We are working to introduce them to toys, treats and playtime. Tinker Bell: This black female is purportedly the sister of Ari (per releasing party). Also 6 years old and 145lbs, Tinker Bell is less confidant than the ... (Read More)other two dogs and would run away if given the chance. No signs of aggression towards people, but completely unsocialized and afraid. Slow steps to introduce her to affection and the world at large are working. Again, coat is in good condition, a bit overweight from grainy foods. Tinker Bell is starting to get used to the new environment. We currently need monetary assistance for boarding and immediate veterinary care for Eddie. We will also need funds to spay and neuter the older two dogs. These dogs deserve a chance at life and loving homes. They have spent their entire lives in a situation not of their making. They have not known the touch and hug of a loving caring human. They have not had a chance to walk next to their human, visit the beach, go for a hike. The things we so often take for granted when spending time with our beloved companions. Please help us give these dogs the opportunity to see the better side of humanity and learn how kind humans can be. INITIAL PLEA: The following is a plea for assistance from the family of this lovely Great Dane 6 year old female. We are sharing the actual plea to demonstrate the actual situation of this family. We do not need anyone's negative responses, they just won't help. If you can help, have any positive suggestions or would care to make donations to the rescue, rehab and rehoming of these dogs, please contact us at Dharris6558@gmail.com. START POST here is the info I have regarding the PURE BREAD[sic] GREAT DANES that are in immediate need of homes please,if you can help in anyway~ MY aunt is in a terrible state of sadness and due to her breast cancer process and my uncle's need for dialysis- they are losing their ranch in Hesperia- there is No time to waste as they will need to be out next week- so the earlier we find these beauties homes the better- I am in San Francisco and helping from a distance, it has been a challenge and just completed placement on three horse, a pig and two goats- the Dogs are last in my list of needs and My aunt barely has money to even buy food, with all her medical costs for her and my uncle and both retired~ to give a little back ground- My aunt and Uncle are past time breeders of Great Danes- they required all adoptions - that the new owners sign an agreement that if at anytime they are unable to care for the dogs, they agree to return the dogs and they would take care of them until they could be placed- this proved to happen more often than she/and my uncle could have ever forseen~ here is the list and as much of a Bio on each that you asked from me~ Two 6 year olds One Black Male and One Blue Female- neither have been spayed or neutered{my Aunt is ashamed of this}but, said they have not had any offspring-she had them in seperate Pins in the barn-she said they are shy of people-in kennels and haven't been in a pack so not good with other dogs ONE 2 year old Black Male he is neutered and likes everyone- she said he needs a vet to find out why he is so skinny though??? END POST Thank you for your consideration. (Less)

Great Dane    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Male Dogs Only, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

UPDATE: LOOK, UP IN THE SKY, IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, IT'S A GREYHOUND! Nope, it's our very one Bree Bree running and having fun in the play yard. Bree Bree is a lovely 7 year old fawn Great Dane. A bit on the shy side at first, Bree Bree has been passed over for her younger, more outgoing friends. But she would be a wonderful companion for an adult family or single person. Bree Bree was kept in a kennel for a number of years after her owner suffered a stroke. She was well fed and cared for but no one shared affection with her or played with her. She needs a chance to be a part of a home and family, where she can be the 'queen.' ... (Read More)Bree Bree loves to go for walks and rides in the car. She isn't great in huge social events, but is great with her on circle of friends and family. She would do best in an adult, quiet home. No thrill seeker here, just a loyal, quiet companion to share your life with. Please contact foster mom directly at DHarris6558@gmail.com. (Less)

(Read More)hope to keep our Gunner on his current regimen including K9 Immunity, K9 Transfer Factors, B17, Ambrotose, Apopcaps. All of these items can be found on Gunnar's wish list at Amazon.com should anyone care to help. He is a wonderful dog and for whatever time he has left, we will continue to make his life complete with love, lots of playtime and joy. It's the least we can do considering it was a human who left him to suffer in the first place with an easy fix - neuter in this case - to eradicate testicular cancer. We love you Gunnar!!!!! UPDATE: This beautiful boy has been diagnosed with cancer. He has undergone emergency surgery to alleviate a painful condition and during that surgery it was determined that the cancer had begun to spread to various parts of his body. We are optimistic that whatever time this boy has left, will be pain free with a very good quality of life with the aid of moderate chemotherapy drugs and nontraditional medications and supplements, under the supervision of a board certified veterinary oncologist. We are hoping to find a very special home for this boy, willing to give him a great life for whatever time he has left. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. Stockton boy has been spared by this gracious shelter and will be taken to a local veterinarian Friday, December 14th. Please contact us at greatdanerescuenetwork@gmail.com ASAP if you would care to donate to his care or are interested in fostering. We are trying to save his life! He has medical needs that will need to be immediately addressed. (Less)

uPDATE: Our Sgt. Diesel is currently in long term foster. We are seeking donations for his continued care at this time. Please see Sgt. Diesel's wish list on Amazon.com. Meet the fabulous Sgt. Diesel. His one time companion shipped out to the Middle East several months ago. Sadly, the last few weeks together, Sgt. Diesel and his owner slept in a car. There was no base housing for the two, the soldier had just recently divorced. Because of Sgt. Diesel's advanced age, NO ONE even considered helping. Sgt. Diesel had lost weight and considerable issues with his eyes and a botched up eye job to correct congenital cosmetic eye defects. ... (Read More)We didn't care about any of that. We only saw a young man who was committed to serving his country. And a wonderful old dog who deserved a second chance at love. Well, this boy has rebounded beautifully. PIease Read Before Adopting a Great Dane in California
Great Dane Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Great Dane is an enormous, but extremely gentle breed often referred to as the Gentle Giant. Great Danes are kind, loyal, and sociable. They need to be around people. Great Danes are gentle, devoted, and wonderful with children, but should be supervised with little ones because of their large size. Great Danes should be well trained as puppies. Great Danes can live in an apartment with enough daily exercise but do best with a large yard.
